50 years of Furwa:
Bonn/Walkertshofen. Furwa Furnierkanten GmbH from Walkertshofen in Bavaria is celebrating a milestone birthday this year. Founded in 1974 by Armin Wiblishauser, the company is one of the leading producers of real veneer edgebands, fineline edgebands, thick veneer edgebands and wrapping veneers thanks to its decades of experience in the processing and finishing of veneers.
Furwa founder Armin Wiblishauser comes from a family that has been active in the wood industry for generations. After studying wood technology, he worked in various companies before joining the family's own production facility for bedroom furniture as technical manager. At the beginning of 1974, he finally founded the company Furwa Furnierkanten, which made a name for itself in the following years as a producer of veneer edgebands on continuous rolls. “The development consisted of galvanizing veneer sheets in larger widths and only later producing the final edge width through a cutting process. This step was the quantum leap, so to speak, from handcrafted edgebanding to industrial production,” says Furwa Managing Director Klaus Müller and continues: ”The wide roll was the prerequisite for equipping veneer edgebands with backs, coating them with adhesive, sanding and varnishing them or even producing thick veneer edgebands from several layers.”
Innovations non-stop
Other innovative products that Furwa has helped to develop and implement include the “LignoTube” veneer tube, antibacterial cedar insoles and real wood handbags, mouse pads and placemats with a flexible veneer surface. Ordinary gift and business cards as well as key cards, which are already made from veneer, will become high-quality bank and credit cards made from refined veneer this year. “Exciting new developments were and are an essential part of the veneer industry. The successful main product and the many creative ideas of Furwa Furnierkanten GmbH are a fine example of the innovative strength of the entire veneer industry,” concludes Ursula Geismann, Managing Director of the Initiative Furnier + Natur and long-standing trend consultant, about the Bavarian company, which she warmly congratulates on 50 successful years. Today it is supported by European companies from the veneer industry, the trade and the veneer processing industry as well as trade associations of the wood industry.
