Taking advantage of the natural benefits of wood:
The best of the tree for a perfect living climate

Bonn. Wood surrounds us throughout our lives. In our own homes, we own and use an average of ten products made of or with wood. These are, for example, stairs and doors, sometimes floors and window frames, mostly shelves, cupboards, beds, chairs, tables and picture frames, and almost always kitchen boards, hairbrushes, wooden spoons and pencils, i.e. mainly objects for everyday use. These are inconspicuous in their typical wood color, natural and therefore very familiar to us. The color wood brown has been an integral part of our four walls for centuries, it is a classic living color. Wood brown radiates already visually an ideal room climate. It always appears warm and homely in terms of color, conveys a sense of security, has a calming and balancing effect. But not only its color, but also the wood itself contributes to the perfect living climate.

We humans always feel a good indoor climate when the temperature and humidity are pleasant. If it is too humid, we don't like the warmth either. If it is too dry, the temperature feels even colder to us. The natural material wood absorbs too much humidity in the home and releases it again in a dry environment. The expert calls this "hygroscopic". As a rule of thumb, the more objects made of real wood there are in my apartment, the more perfect the living climate will be. A valuable side effect of wooden furniture is also its sound-absorbing property. Unlike smooth surfaces made of glass, lacquer or plastic, natural wood is porous-rough under the microscope and therefore virtually sucks in sounds. Not as strongly as textiles, but still much more than its artificial and polished competitors. Last but not least, wood has the ability to store heat and retain it even when the ambient temperature drops. This natural advantage is particularly useful against the backdrop of an energy-saving lifestyle. And it is very pleasant to walk barefoot or with socks over a comfortable wooden floor in winter.

Ursula Geismann, a long-time housing expert and managing director of IFN, explains that wood, with all its advantages, is mostly used in combination with other materials in modern homes. "Therefore, no one has to worry that wood will visually overwhelm or constrict him. Modern living has to do with many materialein and many colors. A classic wooden cabinet can of course show off its good qualities on its own in a mix with colorful upholstered furniture and curtains or contrasting wall colors. Likewise a wooden floor on which lie colorful carpets. Moreover, a combination of wood and colorful materials is always individual and can quickly change the entire atmosphere of a room in a positive way.“

Initiative Veneer + Nature (IFN) The Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN) e.V. was founded in 1996 by the German veneer industry and its partners. Today it is supported by European companies from the veneer industry, the trade and the veneer processing industry as well as trade associations of the wood industry. The aim of the association is to promote veneer as a natural all-round material.
