Veneer as a design element:
Warsaw flat shines with with noble elements from the best of the tree

Bonn/Warsaw. In Warsaw's post-war Praga II housing estate in the Praga Północ district, a 45 square metre flat in need of modernisation has been transformed into a postmodern mix of bold designs, strong textures and attractive colours thanks to the architects from the ‘Mistovia' studio in Katowice. Designs by young Polish brands were combined with vintage furniture, design classics and customised elements. The objects finished with the finest veneer are a real eye-catcher.

In the kitchen, the high built-in units, which are finished with the veneer of an impressive American walnut root, are the main feature. The fascinating organic pattern contrasts beautifully with the smooth surface of the brushed steel cabinets and the strict geometry of the simple white tiles that line part of the wall. Another veneer highlight can be seen when entering the flat: a wardrobe with an impressive veneer, which was designed in 1985 by the Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsass. The ‘fillet of the tree' can also be found in the bathroom: a customised bathroom cabinet in the form of a chest of drawers on squat legs in an intense cobalt tone stands out against the raw pool tiles. The cabinet is made of the same veneer as the built-in furniture in the kitchen and the worktop is decorated with the same green marble that adorns the front door portal. ‘This impressive example is a wonderful example of the value of fine veneer for a modern and contemporary home design. 45 square metres of living space shine in a natural and contemporary light thanks to the wonderful wood grains,' says Ursula Geismann, Managing Director of Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN) and long-time trend analyst in design matters, about the project in Warsaw.
