“I make wood wearable” - High-end bags and accessories made of fine veneer conquer the fashion world

Bad Honnef. At the beginning, the guiding principle was “I make wood wearable!” As part of the dissertation for his wood engineering course, Sebastian Sturm closely examined the design and production of protective sleeves made of the natural material veneer for end devices such as notebooks and mobile phones. Together with a veneer manufacturer, he developed a process that enables very elastic veneer to be produced. “It quickly became clear that this innovative veneer offers numerous possible uses, for example, for the production of unique bags for men and women”, said Sturm.

Sturm was obviously born with his great passion for the natural material wood, after all, his father is a joiner with his own joinery. Since he was a small child, it has always been his wish to learn his father's profession. After his joiner's apprenticeship, he spent two years as a journeyman and then studied wood engineering in Rosenheim and finally did a degree in business administration in Augsburg. Yet the fact that he now produces unique bags made of veneer is purely coincidental; during his time in Rosenheim he visited a festival in South Tyrol, where he met a fashion management student. This is where the idea was born to produce elegant, unique bags made of veneer. It then took around one and a half years from the idea to the first finished bag. A major challenge during this time lay in harmonising the natural veneer and leather materials.

Today Sturm has his own fashion label, SEBASTIANSTURM, under which he not only offers different high-quality handbags for women and men, but also exclusive accessories such as mobile phone cases, purses and wallets and writing cases made of the natural material veneer. Each of his creations is unique, because no two veneer patterns are the same. Due to their understated appearance, business bags made of smoked oak are particularly in demand at the present. Customers who explicitly want to draw attention to the veneer, on the other hand, prefer bags made of amazaque.

The most unusual veneers used by Sturm include bog oak and olive wood. Over the years he has tested a lot of different veneers, but not all woods are suitable for the production of handbags. His bags and accessories made of veneer are now not only in great demand in Europe, but also inspire the fashion world in the USA and Asia. “Veneer shows the aesthetic of wood in a wonderful way and is therefore also predestined for the production of exclusive bags”, said Ursula Geismann, the Secretary of Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN).
