Summer, sun, party mood: Celebrate yes - but sustainable!
Bonn. The barbecue season has begun and the Corona situation allows for one or two larger parties. So it's time to invite friends and relatives and finally celebrate together again. However, plastic tableware like in the past should be taboo: There are nicer, more sustainable and equally cheap alternatives that actively protect the climate.
While in the past lots of plastic tableware characterized the image of larger celebrations, today climate-friendly alternatives are becoming more and more fashionable. For example, there are now knives, forks and spoons made from pressed birch veneer sourced from sustainable forestry. The highlight: "The material from the best of the tree is compostable and can be easily recycled. Because veneer is thinly cut real wood, completely without additives. The natural veneer sheets are then punched out to forks etc. and can be used directly," says Ursula Geismann, a long-time living analyst and managing director of the Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN). But cutlery does not have to be the end of the line: Plates, bowls, dishes, flag skewers, stirrers for coffee and many other products for eating food are also already being pressed from bamboo veneer today. "As real wood, veneer is a quality product with special ecological capabilities. It helps reduce greenhouse gases and leave a livable planet for future generations. Cutlery and tableware made of veneer make an important contribution to this," says Geismann and concludes by advising, "If it absolutely has to be cutlery and tableware made of plastic, then please take those made of recycled plastic. Many retail chains in the food and drugstore sector offer such products. But the better and more environmentally friendly alternative is definitely the proven carbon store wood." (DS)
Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN)
The Initiative Veneer + Nature (IFN) e.V. was founded in 1996 by the German veneer industry and its partners. Today it is supported by European companies from the veneer industry, the trade and the veneer processing industry as well as trade associations of the wood industry. The aim of the association is to promote veneer as a natural all-round material.
