Together with partners Covestro, the Veneer and Nature Initiative, Välinge Innovation Sweden and Cologne joinery Zug um Zug, materials.cologne-The Platform for Design and Innovation presented exciting new materials over the four days.

The Spanish polyurethane product manufacturer Arcesso Dynamics and the Leverkusen-based chemical company Covestro have developed the reaction injection molding material Arfinio. Business Development Manager Dr. Vera Essmann and Hans-Eberhard Stein (both Covestro) explained the material and its possible applications. Cologne-based designer Thomas Schnur found Arfinio to be the ideal material and process for realizing a new chair concept. The material has the look and feel of solid surface materials, but opens up new possibilities in furniture design and overcomes previous production restrictions. It combines the advantages of solid surface and reaction injection molding (RIM). It is also circular, a real world first.

The Bonn-based Initiative Furnier und Natur e.V., the only European association of veneer manufacturers and veneer dealers, showcased selected wood veneers in their original beauty and value. Ursula Geismann, Managing Director of Initiative Furnier und Natur e.V., explained new applications of veneers for high-quality design and sustainability in architecture, interior design and furniture design. Numerous interior designers and carpenters, as well as many end consumers, were fascinated by the variety, quality and feel of the veneer samples on display. The comprehensive handbook “Veneer in Interior Design” was available on site during the special show “Focus Materials” and showed impressive implementations of furniture and interiors.

Martin Beeh, the curator of the special show and initiator of materials.cologne, demonstrated the revolutionary tool-free Threespine furniture click connection from Välinge Innovation Sweden with samples. The technology fascinated furniture professionals, craftsmen and end consumers alike. Threespine makes furniture assembly simple, fast and risk-free. The result is flawless, durable furniture with precise angles and no visible holes. No tools or fittings are required - the parts are simply plugged together. The furniture and interior design industry is changing rapidly, and this innovative technology is the right solution to meet future changes in design, construction, consumer behavior and environmental standards. Threespine makes meeting the future really easy - and is already setting standards for the recyclability of furniture.

The Zug um Zug joinery from Cologne exhibited high-quality, handcrafted furniture and objects made from solid wood, with proof of origin. Benches made of oak from Cologne's Königsforst forest were the ideal place to take a break, talk and browse. Norbert Emonts from Zug um Zug presented the work of the joinery and explained the social aspect of regional craftsmanship.

All the material samples were touched and tried out by the visitors and there was lively discussion. Professionals from furniture construction, exhibition stand construction, architecture, construction and trade were able to talk shop with the experts and learn new things. Samples could be taken away to use in design and development work. Numerous cultural professionals, artists, journalists and private exhibition visitors interested in new things also took the opportunity to find out what was new and exciting about the materials. This curiosity and the desire to discover united all visitors, this kind of exchange to create innovation, sustainability and new application possibilities. The dialog between the visitor groups also gave professionals, creative artists and the interested public insights into the future of materials and design. The machwerkschau, which takes place twice a year, was conceived and successfully launched for this purpose.

Martin Beeh, curator of the special show and initiator of materials.cologne, comments: “I have been in contact with the makers of machwerkhaus Köln for a long time. The machwerkschau gave us the opportunity to develop the theme “Innovative and sustainable materials” as a visitor magnet for the opening. Materials are the starting point for every physical product development and design idea, whether in crafts, design or architecture. Circularity is the order of the day, and all research and development activities must focus on this. The high curatorial standards of the machwerkschau and the intensive cross-industry exchange between all those who have discovered the necessity and joy of developing sustainable solutions come together here. With the machwerkhaus köln, we want to focus on materials and innovation and are working together to further develop the format, also together with our partners from industry, research and science. We have received a very good response and a lot of helpful feedback. Companies that would like to take part in future editions of the machwerkschau can contact me directly. We are looking forward to the next machwerkschau, on the occasion of the international furniture fair imm cologne and the Cologne design week PASSAGEN, from January 12 to 16, 2025!”

Frank Zumbruch - Managing Director and Curator of machwerkhaus köln GmbH - looks back on the premiere with great satisfaction: “The second machwerkschau took place as part of the official opening of machwerkhaus köln as a center for design and urban production. Manufactories, craft businesses, impact-oriented start-ups, prototype builders, design and planning offices as well as innovative small and micro enterprises in the circular economy are given the opportunity to develop, manufacture, assemble, present and sell their products on a total area of almost 20,000 square meters. Sustainable materials play a particularly important role in the context of circular value creation. I am therefore particularly pleased that materials.cologne has been on board as a cooperation partner right from the start. The special show “Focus Materials” was a successful debut for further joint activities, which we are already looking forward to today.”

Dr. Vera Essmann, New Business Development Manager at Covestro Deutschland AG, added: “The machwerkschau in Cologne-Kalk was a lively event in an inspiring atmosphere that brought together a wide range of industries and expertise. I had many valuable discussions with open and interested visitors and partners of the machwerkhaus about our new material Arfinio® and the exciting combination of craftsmanship, technology and design with the aim of circularity.

In short: an inspiring event at which we were able to present our new material Arfinio® to motivated visitors who are all pursuing the goal of a circular economy - great!

The “Focus Materials” special show at materials.cologne was a great opportunity to present our new recyclable material Arfinio® in an attractive environment. We had many interesting conversations and made contacts - thank you, Martin!

Ursula Geismann, Managing Director of the Initiative Furnier und Natur e.V. (IFN) was enthusiastic about the new event format:

“The concept of the Machwerkhaus aroused my curiosity. Then the opportunity to show our natural material veneer as part of the Machwerk show made sense. Curiosity turned into interest and so did the many visitors. The team has created an attractive exhibition format that fits perfectly into the great location. The guests listened to the inspiring speeches and inputs at the opening party and made it a successful start to a new cultural centerpiece for Cologne with a good mood and great conversations. Now I'm a real fan and I'm really looking forward to the next events.

Norbert Emonts from Zug um Zug e.V. emphasized the added value of networking different players: “The Machwerkschau represents a successful fusion of creativity, culture and craftsmanship. For us as a social organization, this was a very special opportunity to talk to craftspeople, creative people and teachers. In this inspiring environment, we were able to present our upcycling philosophy with our creations made from regional materials in an appealing way.”
